My fantastic 3 day intensive D.I.Y course is great value at only £475.00 all in, and represents exceptional value for money for what you get to learn and do.

I’m well aware there are cheaper courses out there……look at like for like when you’re shopping around and remember you get what you pay for.

This is a ‘life’ skill I teach you so look at it long term…..you could get back the cost of your course many times over.

I often get asked why my course is only 3 days and others are 4/5 days or more.

The answer is simple: numbers

I teach no more than 2 people at a time which means I can teach perhaps the same amount of content as other courses (maybe even more) but in a shorter space of time because I have less people.
We all have one pair of hands and eyes.
More people simply means more time needed.
You will also feel more of a personal,1:1 service on my course rather than feeling like you’re on a ‘production line’ on others.

And the added bonus also is if you’re working,it means less time you have to take off work and less days off of your holiday entitlement.

A unique course

I strongly believe you will be hard pressed to find a better 3 day D.I.Y plastering course anywhere in the country for what you get to learn and do for your hard earned money.

This could be the best 3 days off and the best £475.00 you will ever spend 🙂

Remember the course includes the cost of your materials, waste management and also use of tools.

ALL COURSES ARE SUBJECT TO A £50 DEPOSIT TO SECURE A PLACE OR FULL COURSE FEE IF BOOKED WITHIN 7 DAYS OF COURSE START.
PAYMENTS FOR COURSES ARE MADE BY BACS TRANSFER.

It’s impossible to teach you every aspect of the plastering trade in just 3 days, so I make no promises or guarantees you’ll be a ‘master plasterer’ at the end of the course, but I’m confident you will gain a sound basic knowledge to complete your own plastering projects.

The aim of my course is all about teaching you the fundamental core basics of plastering and to lay a foundation for you to build on and give you the confidence to carry out your own projects.

This course will ideally suit:

  • The D.I.Y enthusiasts who want to plaster their own house and save money.

  • Tradespeople who want to add to their existing trade & make more money.

  • Anyone who wants to see if a plastering career could be a possibility for them.

Please note: My course only covers the internal aspects of plastering and doesn’t cover anything external.

Plasterboard is now the most common method of plastering your walls.

It is quick, cheap, drying times are faster and the actual work itself is much easier than doing it the old traditional way of applying a backing coat on your walls.

Plasterboard is also much more superior to use if you’re considering insulating your property more and there are now many different types and sizes of insulated plasterboard on the market.

During this part of the course, you will be cutting and fixing standard plasterboard using drywall screws to a ceiling and also to a masonry wall ( including into a mock window) using an adhesive.

This method is known as ‘dot & dab’.

I will show you how to correctly cut and fix metal corner beading for external angles.

Everything starts in your bucket,so I will show you how to correctly mix your backing coats, adhesives and your finishing plasters to the perfect workable consistencies.

You will be mixing up all your own plasters using power tools.

You will apply Thistle Bonding backing plaster onto a surface.

This is a great opportunity to have some practice on the hawk & trowel and to get used to working with the two tools together when you’re applying wet plaster and will put you in good stead for when you come to apply your finish coats of plaster.

You will also skim finish your backing plaster after it has dried for a couple of days where I can then show you how to control the suction of this background so that your finish plaster doesn’t dry out to quick.

You will be applying Thistle Multi-finish plaster onto your surfaces.

  • DON’T OVER-COMPLICATE IT…….KEEP IT SIMPLE.

So this is the part where I think why most people come onto my course…….how to skim finish your surfaces properly.

You will see lots of confusing and conflicting information on the internet on how to skim finish a wall or ceiling.

I’ve even seen plasterers arguing amongst themselves on plastering videos and forums on how to skim finish properly!

You can often be left asking yourself who is right and who is wrong when you see this information.

Skimming in my opinion is all about keeping it simple and not over complicating it and making the job as easy for yourself as possible so on my course, the skim finishing process will be taught in 4 stages; using only ONE trowel and we will focus particularly on the application of your finish plaster.

Nail it at the application stage and the whole skimming process will be much easier for you.

We will work on your technique and the angle & pressure of your trowel required to achieve this.

I will also show you how your finish plaster SHOULD be troweled up at stage 4 of the process in order for your paint to ‘key’ to your new plaster properly.

  • ‘YOUR SKIM COATS WILL ONLY EVER BE AS GOOD AS THE BACKGROUND YOU ARE GOING ON TO’

If you have a surface to skim over other than plasterboard,it will almost certainly require some kind of preparation prior to skimming either to control the suction or to give the background an improved  ‘mechanical key’ for your plaster to stick to so we will go through in detail all the preparation side of the trade on what to use so your plaster doesn’t dry out to quickly and crack or fall off your surface because the background hasn’t had the correct prep work done beforehand.

I will also give you some advice on preparation of backgrounds that you want to re-skim over to minimize the risk of cracks appearing in your new skim coat plaster.

I will fully demonstrate how to make repairs to:

  • SOLID PLASTER WALLS

  • DOT & DABBED PLASTERBOARD WALLS

  • CEILINGS/STUD WALLS

We will go through preparation, the correct plasters to use and how to finish them properly to match up to existing so you won’t have to skim over the whole wall or ceiling to cover up a small patch.

At the end of the course, you will receive a very nice Certificate of Completion from myself which you can proudly display on your bedroom wall 🙂

Learn about the basic tools you will need to carry out your own plastering projects.

During the course you will use a set provided by me, so you don’t need to bring anything.

You will also be given the opportunity to purchase one of my unique 13 piece pre-worn hand trowel sets personally put together by myself.

During the 3 days,we will also discuss general plastering techniques such as

  • the correct materials to use for preparation of different backgrounds to control suction on moderate/high suction backgrounds and also to give a non porous/low adhesion background a ‘key’ for your plaster.

  • What to do and use when considering re-plastering  over an existing background (known as re-skimming)

  • Ask anything you like about plastering

  • You will be encouraged to take notes and photos for future reference

  • Phone/email support after course if you require any further help or advice

You won’t be just plastering a wall like some other courses I’ve seen.  All students will have their own 6ft square bay/area to work in,and you certainly won’t be going over other people’s work from previous courses to save costs… everything you do on my course will be done from scratch, just how you would do in your own situation.

All tools, safety equipment and toilet/washing facilities are provided for you to use, all you need is:

  • Suitable clothing – your clothes are likely to come into contact with wet plaster, plaster dust, water, and perhaps PVA glue, so choose appropriately.

  • Safety footwear preferably steel toe-capped but any good sturdy footwear will suffice (leave the high heels at home please) – you will be on your feet most of the day, and will be working from floor to above head height.

  • A packed lunch each day, although there are a couple of mobile cafes nearby.  I have a microwave and fridge on site.

Unlimited complimentary tea, coffee and juice is available throughout the course……..I may even throw in the odd biccy as well 😉
